Review
If the 2011 Jaguar XJ teaches us one thing, it’s that the Jaguar marque will not be written off. The once stodgy and mostly overlooked XJ has transformed itself into a luxury powerhouse with the all-new 2011 model. Jaguar has given the XJ one of the most distinct and stunning exterior styles we’ve seen in recent years. The V8 power under the hood is abundant and provides a controlled but fun driving experience. The one pitfall of the 2011 XJ is its visibility issue that results from the prominent A pillars. Read more details from our road test of the 2011 Jaguar XJ below.
Performance
You won’t find any complaints about the stellar performance of the 2011 Jaguar XJ, powered by a well-designed 5.0-liter, 385-horsepower V8. The base engine launches the car from 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. Although the new XJ is almost 300 pounds heavier than its predecessor, it is still significantly lighter than its German and Japanese competitors, giving it a distinct advantage in the areas of efficiency and speed. The four-wheel active suspension performs well in all modes, and the automated manual six-speed transmission is at the top of the super-luxury class. If you need even more power from your cat, consider the XJ Supercharged or Supersport models, which provide 470 and 510 horsepower, respectively.
Exterior Features
In our photos of the new Jaguar XJ, you’ll see a sedan that is unlike any of its competitors or its predecessors. In fact, what car reviews seem to like most about the styling of the XJ is how saliently different it is. Highlights include a panoramic roof that allows for maximum natural light in the cabin. The roof slides up and out instead of down and back so it does not consume any passenger headroom. The glass is darkly tinted for temperature control and privacy, and drivers can close the twin blinds under the roof at any time for extra privacy. Standard exterior equipment includes xenon headlights, power headlight washers, heated and auto-dimming exterior mirrors, 19-inch alloy wheels, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The 2011 Jaguar XJ is available in the standard-wheelbase or long-wheelbase model, which is 5.3 inches longer. The standard XJ comes in only one trim, but Jaguar offers two separate performance iterations of the sedan: the XJ Supercharged and the XJ Supersport (special-order only).
Interior Features
The Jaguar name stands for elegance and luxury, which also happen to be the defining characteristics of the 2011 XJ’s interior. The cabin is draped in high-quality leather and offers a pleasant, accommodating ambience. Auto reviews love the new 12.3-inch high-def Virtual Instruments, featuring a dual-view eight-inch touchscreen that can play DVD movies for the passenger while the driver attends to satellite navigation or car functions. Overall, the cabin is gorgeously built and a flattering complement to the revised exterior of the XJ. Standard interior features on the 2011 Jaguar XJ include a 16-way power driver’s seat, a 12-way power passenger’s seat, leather upholstery, power retractable mirrors, keyless ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal remote, and much more.
Safety and Specifications
Car insurance industry and federal government crash test information will likely never be released on the 2011 XJ because of its price point. However, Jaguar has spared no expense with standard car safety equipment on the new XJ. Safety features include antilock brakes, seatbelt pre-tensioners, stability and traction control, child-seat anchors, dusk-sensing headlights, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, a blind-spot warning system, electronic brakeforce distribution, a driver head restraint whiplash protection system, and front and rear parking sensors. An overview of the 2011 Jaguar XJ’s specs is included below.
* Car pricing: $71,650 MSRP; $65,202 invoice
* Engine: 5.0-liter, 385-hp V8
* Transmission: six-speed shiftable automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive
